src="http://protomondo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/menu-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="menu" width="150" height="150" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1904" />WordPress 3.0 came out weeks ago, but I just recently got around to updating. Over the years one of the biggest problems I have faced when a new version of WordPress is released is that things get whacked out with whatever theme I happen to be using. Well, thus far everything seems to be working pretty well with Arthemia (knocks wood). One of the new features in WP 3.0 is a much more robust interface to handle the creation of custom menus. This is handy to know, because the plugin that I use manage my recipes has been updated to (among many other things) take advantage of this new functionality. There are a few things that you have to do first however to get the new menu scheme working in an older theme like Arthemia however. WordPress uses a new function called
wp_nav_menu
. If you go to your dashboard and click on Appearance > Menus, you will see the following message:

“The current theme does not support menus.”

The first thing that you have to do to add this functionality to Arthemia (or any other pre-3.0 theme for that matter) is open up the functions.php file in your theme folder.

In that file, you want to add the following code:

if (function_exists('add_theme_support')) {
	add_theme_support('menus');
}

You can add this pretty much anywhere, but the best place to insert it is just before the last

?>

this will ensure that you don’t mess with any other functions already in the file. Save the
functions.php
file and close it.

Now you can go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus and you will see that the the menu function is now supported. In this window, you first want to give your menu a name. Since I am replacing Arthemia’s navigation menu, I will call mine “Site Navigation” but you can really call it anything you want. Giving the menu a name allows you to place multiple menus in any template file. After naming and saving the custom menu, you have several options to add and organize the links in the menu. For example, you can select the Pages and Categories you want to add then click the Add to Menu button. Note that you can also add custom links to either internal or external url’s. You can also drag the menus into any order that you want. Set the menu up however you like and save it. You can now close the menu management window.

Finally, to add the new menu to your theme, open up the template file where you want the menu. In Arthemia, I want to simply replace the main navigation at the top of the page, so I open up the
header.php
file. Here you want to add the code:

<?php wp_nav_menu('menu=Site Navigation'); ?>

To wherever you want the menu to appear.
(Note that “Site Navigation” is what ever the custom menu name you gave the menu)

In Arthemia look for the code:

<li><a href="<?php echo get_option('home'); ?>/">Home</a></li>

<?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&title_li='); ?>

</ul>

and replace

<?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&title_li='); ?>

with

<?php wp_nav_menu('menu=Site Navigation'); ?>

this leaves the “Home” menu item in place, and adds your custom menu after it. If you wanted to get rid of the home menu you could delete that as well, just make sure you leave the list tags in place so that the menu styles correctly. There are tons of parameters available to the custom menu, many of which allow you to assign classes and tags. To see the code that is actually added to the page, open it up, control+click (or right+click) on the code, and select “view source” and you should be able to figure out how you can style it to your hearts content. So that is it – WordPress has done an excellent job creating a way for you to have an infinite number of custom menus.
<div

Lots has happened since I last wrote: School finished up, Ana and Joao got married (note: I am still waiting for photos), not one but two of our over-40 friends found themselves surprisingly pregnant, and Jennifer and I took a fun-but-way-too-short vacation to London to attend the opening of “1:1 – Architects Build Small Spaces” at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I was fortunate enough to work alongside Andrew Freear, Danny Wicke, and Brett Jones to design the Rural Studio’s entry into the exhibit. There were nineteen “International Practices” invited to submit proposals for the exhibit, and then seven of the proposals were selected for construction in the museum. We were very honored to be invited to submit, and incredibly surprised and excited when our proposal “Woodshed” was selected for construction. The ‘Woodshed’ is intended to be a utilitarian yet noble structure constructed using forest ‘thinnings’ sourced from Wales. Thinning is a forest management practice in which small, constricted trees are removed to allow others to thrive. Costing as little as three dollars per ton, thinnings provide a plentiful, renewable, affordable – and underutilized – source of construction material. The word ‘woodshed’ is also a verb. It is an improvisation term used in jazz music meaning to improve one’s technical ability through focus, diligence and repetition – a sentiment echoed hopefully in the rigorously iterative design methods in which the the Studio engages as well as in the modular, extensible nature of the ‘Woodshed’ itself. If you click on the thumbnail above you can see a few construction photos; the movie below shows how the whole thing is put together – hopefully I will get some images up soon of the actual finished installation… The V&A stuff kept us pretty busy, but we did get to do a few other fun things while we were in London. The weather was so nice we spent as much time outdoors as possible – on our first free day we walked all over the city, stopping to visit both St. Paul’s and the Tate Modern. On our other free day we spent most of the day at Kew Gardens, which was definitely the highlight of my trip!

<object

I completed that back on March 31st, and then immediately took an unintended hiatus. What ever happened to “old habits die hard?” Writing posts for 100 days <del
datetime="2010-04-29T00:09:48+00:00">straight</del> in a row only felt like a chore maybe four days total (I will let you figure which days those were). The only real problem with being so slavish and dogmatic about it is that I began to find myself subconsciously considering the value of my daily experiences simply through their blogability. The past three weeks have been a nice break – but obviously it time to refocus my energies on some other ridiculously banal and pointless ascetic practice. Besides, my friend Joy has finally fired her blog back up, so I did not feel so bad taking a break – I mean, there must be SOME balance in the ‘ol blogosphere…

Anyway, for my 101st <del
datetime="2010-04-29T00:09:48+00:00">straight</del> post, I thought it would be fun to play that old Google game “Rusty Needs.” Everybody Googles themselves every once in a while, only to find out that there is someone out there with the same name as yours that is way more popular than you, as clearly demonstrated by their Google page ranking. What can you do about it? Simple: just ask Google what you need to be a better, more popular person. How do you do it? In Google, just type in “
Your Name
Needs” in quotation marks and BAM! Google will tell you all your shortcomings. I actually think the first time I saw this game you were actually supposed to type in “Your Name wants,” but that seems so decadent in today’s economy. I think it is much better to stick to needs until things turn around for sure.

So here are mine – surprisingly, none of these really seems very surprising at all – my immediate response to most of them is “Tell me about it…” So anyway – next week is my birthday – anything on this list would be fine by me.

Rusty needs to be separated from the sheep when they are worked.

Rusty needs to take some time before he begins in order to be sure.

Rusty needs to recognize his assumptions and work to eliminate them.

Rusty needs swimmies.

Rusty needs school

Rusty needs our prayers.

Rusty needs our help.

Rusty needs our help again.

Rusty needs repair.

Rusty needs to lock it up!

Rusty needs a special home.

Rusty needs a foster, fast!

Rusty needs to ride the coat tails of Penske Racing.

Rusty Needs Help To Face His Future.

Rusty needs some friends.

Rusty needs to disassociate himself or his credibility will be in question, especially since this company is under investigation for criminal activity.

Rusty needs a new oar.

Rusty needs a stable relationship.

Rusty needs a caretaker.

Rusty’s needs would be better met in a home free of the dominance issues and tussles that ensue.

Rusty NEEDS a job.

Rusty needs something that will keep him active for a good long time.

Rusty needs to take lessons.

Rusty needs to generate some buzz around the brand.

Rusty needs a fenced yard and prerfers to have the company of another dog.

Rusty needs more listeners.

Rusty needs some mud boggers in Volkswagen Cars.

Rusty needs to get on with his life.

Rusty needs some parts.

Rusty needs our help, and we’re going to help him.

Rusty needs to go to a large university hospital where they are more familiar with his polycythemia.

Rusty needs something a little more interesting.

Rusty needs a truck, I think.

Rusty needs a little time out to rest!

Rusty needs a family to call his own.

Rusty needs to mind his own business.

Rusty needs a new pair of…everything.

Rusty needs a chassis.

Rusty needs no grease.

Rusty needs help to face his future.

Rusty needs a date.

Rusty needs to find a job.

Rusty needs repairs in the business.

Rusty needs to get on with his life.

Rusty needs food but has to get past the deli counter without the butcher seeing him!

rusty. href="http://www.rd.com/your-america-inspiring-people-and-stories/would-you-marry-the-same-person-again-around-the-world-with-one-question/article174236.html">Readers Digest posed to readers in an international poll conducted in 15 countries. The survey concluded that 68 percent of all respondents would say “I do” again to their spouse. Surprisingly, it was only slightly lower in the United States at 63 percent. The same survey over at Answer.com has a much more depressing result, revealing that only 29% of respondents would pick the same spouse if they had to do it over again. I am not sure what to make of the marked disparity in the two polls, but I can tell you this – I would marry Jen again in a heartbeat, and here are 5 reasons why:

I still really enjoy looking at her.

She has to be the funniest person I know.

No one works harder and is more diligent, thoughtful and caring.

She is my best friend – as such she would be compelled to tell me how awful my new wife was for me. I mean that is what best friends do, right?

I have invested so much time in causing her a lifetime of heartache and aggravation I cannot imagine throwing all of that hard work away and starting over with someone else.

But just to be on the safe side – I am getting a subscription to the Reader’s Digest ASAP. It seems their readers have a much more happy and successful married life than everyone else in the world.

Lamb Chops with a nice mustard au jus sauce. What a treat it turned out to be. In this week’s larder from Moore Farms and Friends, we had several nice-sized rutabagas (not too large, but not too small), a turnip, and a couple of small bunches of greens (one kale, one chard). We slow-steamed the greens over in a mustard sauce, and cooked the rutabagas and turnip down into a soft and smooth puree for a side dish. I got a new tube pan several weeks ago and have been dying to try it out, so for desert we also made a nice lemon angel food cake. While making it together, I learned that Jennifer REALLY loves to sift flour. Finally, with a dozen egg yolks left over, we also made a month’s supply of lemon curd as well. Also, after adding these two recipes to this post, I leaned that evidently the plugin that I use to add ingredients to my posts is broken – looks like I will need to go back and fix it – until then, sorry the recipe lists are throwing an error! It is always something….
<div

All of the rain and cool weather that we have been “enjoying” this summer has reportedly slowed the farm crops down by about two weeks. Spring sprouts are supposed to coming in however, but until then I think it will be root vegetables and greens for a while yet. on another front though, we are supposed to be getting access to fresh stream-fed catfish and pasture raised chicken in just a couple of weeks – yea!

So here is what we got THIS week:<br
